API 579 Fitness for Service Practice Exam

CTOD stands for Crack Tip Opening Displacement. It is a measure of how much the crack tip region opens under load, which reflects a material’s resistance to ductile tearing. In fracture mechanics and Fitness-for-Service (FFS) practice, CTOD is used to quantify ductile fracture resistance and to help judge whether a flaw will remain stable in service.

In NSC/FFS evaluations, CTOD values (often via CTOD resistance data or critical CTOD values derived from tests) are compared to the service loading to determine if the flaw can stay contained without further cracking. If the service-induced opening stays within the allowable CTOD range, the flaw is considered acceptable; if not, actions such as repairs, more inspection, or derating may be needed.

The other statements are not correct because CTOD is not a Crack Test Opening Diameter—CTOD is a displacement at the crack tip, not a diameter. It is also not simply a threshold displacement; while a critical CTOD value can be used as a criterion, CTOD itself is a displacement measurement, and it is not a measure of corrosion rate.
